Imagine no longer being able to do things on your own. Suddenly you are unable to open a door, answer the phone, pick up a pencil or hear a fire alarm. Think what it would be like to have people stare at you because you’re in a wheelchair, or feel isolated and alone because you’re “different.”
Place a Canine Companions for Independence assistance dog in the picture and everything changes. Thanks to the practical tasks the dog performs, there's a new buddy to rely on, creating independence for that person in need.
Canine Companions assistance dogs provide physical and emotional support, but the greater benefit is social interaction. The dog is a social bridge that draws others to them. Conversations are easier, social outings become fun and interactive, self-esteem & happiness increases.
Free of Charge:
Canine Companions for Independence is a national non-profit organization that professionally trains assistance dogs for children and adults with a range of disabilities, including wounded veterans, autism, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and deaf and hard of hearing. With five training centers across the country, Canine Companions has partnered 3600 people with highly trained dogs, resulting in increased independence and new opportunities.
How to Get Involved
